Review & Giveaway: The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines!

The Vincent Boys (The Vincent Boys #1)
(Re) release Date: 10/28/12
Hardcover/e-book
288 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Get seduced by a sizzling account of attraction and betrayal in this previously self-published phenomenon.

There was something wicked about Beau that drew me to him. What was wrong with me? Why did I want to sin so badly?

Ashton is getting tired of being good, of impressing her parents and playing ideal girlfriend to Sawyer Vincent. Sawyer is perfect, a regular Prince Charming, but when he leaves town for the summer, it’s his cousin Beau who catches Ashton’s eye. Beau is the sexiest guy she’s ever seen, and even though he’s dangerous, Ashton is drawn to him.

Beau loves his cousin like a brother, so the last thing he wants to do is make a move on Sawyer’s girl. Ashton is off-limits, absolutely. That’s why he does his best to keep his distance, even though he’s been in love with her forever. When Ashton wants to rekindle their childhood friendship in Sawyer’s absence, Beau knows he should say no.

Ashton and Beau don’t want to hurt Sawyer. But the more they try to stay away from each other, the more intense their urges become. It’s getting way too hard to resist...

I loved him, but I loved her more.

I’ve been dreading writing this review.  I thought that waiting 5 days after I finished this book, I would be able to write down my feelings on this book.  I was wrong!  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express all the feelings and emotions I went through with The Vincent Boys.  To say that I loved this book would be a severe understatement.  How do you know when you love a book?  When you receive a review copy but after reading 20 pages you rush to buy the Kindle version just so you can read at every possible spare moment.  When you have to stay an hour later at work because you didn’t get any work done because you were reading while pretending to work.  When you stay up until 2:30am no matter how tired you are because you just Can’t. Stop. Reading!  When the whole time you are reading the book, you are mentally kicking yourself for not having read the book sooner.  And when you finish the book, you wish you could read it all over again.  Despite the raving reviews and the endless recommendations from Andrea, Ellen and Autumn, I was hesitant to read this book even though I’m a big Abbi Glines fan.  Why?  Well, I’m not a fan of books about cheating.  To me, it’s very black and white.  Right and wrong.  But Abbi Glines does an amazing job of making you rethink this.

The story of Ashton and Beau hooked me right from the very beginning.  I love friendship-turned romance stories, and this is one of the best I have read.  Growing up, the Vincent boys and Ashton were inseparable.  Even though they were all close, Ashton and Beau were best friends.  Up until Sawyer went behind Beau’s back and asked Ashton out.  From that moment, the friendship between Ashton and Beau was gone.  They rarely talked anymore even though Beau was crazy about Ashton.  But she was his cousin’s girl now and it was easier for Beau to stay away from Ashton than to try to hide his feelings.  When Sawyer leaves with his family for the summer, Ashton rekindles her friendship with Beau.  At first, it starts off as an awkward relationship between them but it quickly becomes clear that they still have feelings for each other.  As much as they try to fight it and do the right thing, Ash and Beau fall hard for each other.  Then Sawyer comes back from his trip early.  Ashton realizes that as much as she loves Sawyer, she is not in love with him and that she isn’t herself when she is with him.  Beau remembers who the real Ashton is and he’s crazy in love with her and Ashton finally feels free to be herself around him.  She is heartbroken because she wants to do the right thing and break things off with Sawyer but she also doesn’t want them to hate each other or the whole town to be against Beau.  As much as she tries to do the right thing, she’s just not sure what that is anymore.

OMG, I LOVED this story so freaking much!  Ashton, Beau and Sawyer are great characters with many flaws, which only makes me love them more.  Ashton is the preachers daughter, she lost herself when she started dating Sawyer and became the person she thought she should be instead of the person she wants to be.  She let go of her friendship with Beau even though they were best friends.  She is so conflicted by her feelings for both of the Vincent boys and she makes mistakes because of it.  Sawyer was the town ‘golden boy’.  He’s quarterback of the football team and he has everything he wants, including the perfect girlfriend.  He’s nice and respectful and charming…and he completely bored me.  At first I felt bad for him but the more I read I liked him less and less.  Oh Beau!  I have no words to adequately describe my love for him.  He was just perfect.  After he lost Ashton, he became the town bad boy.  Drinking and sleeping around too much.  He’s had a hard life but Sawyer was always there for him.  No matter how much he loves Ashton, he never wanted to hurt Sawyer so he kept his distance from Ashton.

Love is never easy and Abbi captured it perfectly.  The relationship and struggles between Ash and Beau is beautiful and messy and full of passion and heartbreak.  I had to put this book down several times and just let out a “fuck!” because it was that good and intense.  As sad I was to see it end, the ending was perfect.  The next book, The Vincent Brothers is Sawyer’s story.  After reading this book I wasn’t that crazy about reading it because I wasn’t a big Sawyer fan, but I needed another Abbi Glines fix.  All I can say about that is that I am now a big Beau AND Sawyer fan.  The Vincent boys stole my heart.  I feel like an addict now because I need more Abbi Glines!  I’ve already bought the first book in her Sea Breeze series and I can’t wait to devour through those too.  The Vincent Boys was an emotional and heartbreaking story that will stay with me for a very long time.

So, just in case you couldn’t tell from my review (or incoherent rambling), I five-starred the shit out of this book!  Definitely one of my top 10 books of the year and one of my all-time favorite books EVER!

5 out of 5 sparkly stars!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from The Vincent Boys:
-He’d always had everything I didn’t have: the perfect parents, home and life.  But none of that mattered because I’d had Ashton.  Sure, we all three were friends, but Ash had been mine.  She’d been my partner in crime, the one person I told all my dreams and fears to, my soul mate.  Then just like everything else in Sawyer’s perfect life, he got my girl.  The only thing I’d thought I could call mine had become his.
-“Ash, I’m trying real hard to be good.  Good isn’t my thing, but Sawyer’s important to me.  Please remember I’ve got my limits, and you studying my mouth like you want a taste is pushing me dangerously close to the edge of those limits.”

-“Touch me,” she whispered.  The fact that she was Sawyer’s girl no longer seemed to matter.  I couldn’t tell her no.  Hell, I couldn’t tell myself no.

-The moment my mouth touched hers, my world started spinning beneath me.  I couldn’t get enough.  I had her bra off and my hands full within seconds.  The loud moan of pleasure that escaped from her mouth almost sent me over the edge.

-“All I knew then was that you were Sawyer’s.  My best friend was gone.  I envied him for the first time that day.  He’d finally won the one prize I’d thought was mine.”

-“Staying with him.  Letting him touch you, hold you, God.  It’s eating me alive.  You may be keeping Sawyer from hating me, but you’re only making me hate him.”

RACHEL:   Swooning over Losing It by Cora Carmack:
He kissed me hard, and long enough that I could taste more of him in my mouth than myself. I dug my fingernails into his shoulders, because I had learned that every time I did, he pressed his hips harder against mine.

KELLY: Swooning over Poltergeeks by Sean Cummings:
He reached up and placed his hands against my cheeks and gently kissed me back with a tenderness and purity that sent waves of peace and contentment through my entire body.

TARA: Swooning over Flawed by Kate Avelynn:

Breath catching, I stretched to meet him halfway. Our mouths fit together perfectly, just like I always knew they would. I should pull away. I don't.

TRISH: Swooning over Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (in celebration of Breaking Dawn 2--the final movie!)
--His face drifted to the side, his nose skimming across my collarbone. He came to rest with the side of his face pressed tenderly against my chest. Listening to my heart.
--"But..." His fingers touched my lips lightly, making me shiver again. "There are other hungers. Hungers I don't even understand, that are foreign to me."

NEREYDA: Swooning over The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines:

The moment my mouth touched hers, my world started spinning beneath me. I couldn't get enough. I had her bra off and my hands full within seconds. The loan moan of pleasure that escaped from her mouth almost sent me over the edge.

Trapped in the underground theater world of 1890s New Orleans, Hale Ferrer has only one goal: escape. But not without Teeny, the orphan-girl she rescued from the streets and promised to protect.

Freddie Lovel, Hale's wealthy Parisian suitor, seems to be the easy solution. If only his touch could arouse her interest like Beau's, the penniless stagehand who captures her heart.

Denying her fears, Hale is poised to choose love until an evil lurking in their cabaret-home launches a chain of events that could cost her everything.

Spotlight on The Farm by Emily McKay

The Farm

420 pages
Published by Berkley Trade
Published December 4, 2012
Find it on Amazon

Life was different in the Before: before the Ticks began devouring humans in a deadly swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined “for their own protection.” These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race...

Wow! Just wow! This book grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go. The story is told in multiple POV. Lily dominates the story, but Carter and Mel both have some chapters along the way. While I gravitated toward Lily and her protective nature, always worrying more about her sister, Mel, than anything else, I really loved the chapters told by Mel. She's autistic and boy does the girl have an interesting mind. She really adds depth to the story.

Lily is only concerned about Mel and her own safety, which means getting off of the Farm before they turn 18. 18 is the age they are supposedly released, but Lily thinks it's really the age they are fed to the Ticks. So Lily devises a plan, but everything gets derailed when Carter, a sort-of-friend and major crush from the Before, shows up. He's not at all what he seems, but Lily must trust him in order to go through with her plan to escape.

Carter has lots of secrets and I won't spoil any of them for you, but let me tell you that nothing is as it seems in this story. McKay has tons of twists and keeps you guessing. And be ready to experience every emotion in the book. There were scenes that had me cringing and grossed out. Other scenes made me want to cry. And the tension is high just about all the time. You're in for a crazy good ride with this story. It's easily on my lists of favorite books this year.

Jake’s the new guy at school. The boy next door with burning hands and an unbelievable gift that targets him for corruption.

Something more than fate has brought them together. An evil bigger than both of them lurks in the shadows nearby, hiding in plain sight. Two angels stand guard, unsure what’s going to happen. A realm that only angels and demons—and Brielle—can perceive.

Broken Wings (Angel Eyes Trilogy #2)
Release Date: February 19, 2013
Paperback/e-book
320 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Giant angels with metal wings and visible song. A blind demon restored from the pit of darkness. And a girl who has never felt more broken.

Brielle sees the world as it really is: a place where the Celestial exists side by side with human reality. But in the aftermath of a supernatural showdown, her life begins to crumble. Her boyfriend, Jake, is keeping something from her—something important. Her overprotective father has started drinking again. He’s dating a much younger woman who makes Brielle’s skin crawl, and he’s downright hostile toward Jake. Haunting nightmares keep Brielle from sleeping, and flashes of Celestial vision keep her off kilter.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s been targeted. The Prince of Darkness himself has heard of the boy with healing in his hands and of the girl who sees through the Terrestrial Veil. When he plucks the blind demon, Damien, from the fiery chasm and sends him back to Earth with new eyes, the stage is set for a cataclysmic battle of good versus evil.

Then Brielle unearths the truth about her mother’s death and she must question everything she ever thought was true.

Brielle has no choice. She knows evil forces are converging and will soon rain their terror down upon the town of Stratus. She must master the weapons she’s been given. She must fight.

But can she fly with broken wings?

Review: Greta and the Goblin King by Chloe Jacobs!

Greta and the Goblin King (Mylena Chronicles #1)
Release Date: 11/13/12
Paperback/e-book
400 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
While trying to save her brother from a witch’s fire four years ago, Greta was thrown in herself, falling through a portal to Mylena, a dangerous world where humans are the enemy and every ogre, ghoul, and goblin has a dark side that comes out with the eclipse.

To survive, Greta has hidden her humanity and taken the job of bounty hunter—and she’s good at what she does. So good, she’s caught the attention of Mylena’s young goblin king, the darkly enticing Isaac, who invades her dreams and undermines her will to escape.

But Greta’s not the only one looking to get out of Mylena. An ancient evil knows she’s the key to opening the portal, and with the next eclipse mere days away, every bloodthirsty creature in the realm is after her—including Isaac. If Greta fails, she and the lost boys of Mylena will die. If she succeeds, no world will be safe from what follows her back...

***ARC received by Entangled Teen for review purposes***
One of my favorite things about reading (and there are plenty!) is that it opens your eyes and makes you rethink what you thought you knew.  Yes, we already know that vampires, fey and werewolves are hot.  And I learned last year that even aliens can be HOT (Daemon), but who knew goblins could be so hot?  When I thought of goblins I used to think of horrible looking creatures, but now?  All I could think of is Isaac. (cue swooning)

Three years ago, Greta saved her little brother from being pushed into the fire by an evil witch.  Greta fell into the fire instead and was transported to an alternate world of Mylena where everything is covered in snow and evil creatures such as goblins, fairies, ogres and sprites.  One of these sprites found Greta and took her in.  He protected her and trained her to become a bounty hunter.  Greta has become one of the best bounty hunters, but what she is really looking for is a way to get back home.  Greta must hide her true identity from the people of Mylena because they hate humans and they blame them for their current state.  Greta thinks she has everyone fooled.  Everyone but the Goblin King, Isaac.

Greta and the Goblin King was exactly the kind of book I was looking for!  The action starts right away from the first page when Greta is after a monster who has kidnapped a young boy.  Greta is a bit outnumbered but Isaac comes to her rescue.  Instead of thanking him, Greta is a little mean to him.  You see, Greta and Isaac have some…history together and it makes things between them very awkward and tense.  Isaac is hiding things from Greta but for the most part it is for her own good.  As king, Isaac has the ability to enter Greta’s dreams.  Although she can hide from him in real life, she can’t hide from him in her dreams.  The dream scenes were some of my favorites because we get to see both of them with their guards down.  (Adrian and Isaac can share some good dream stories)  I LOVED that they already knew each other before we get to meet them.  The banter between them was funny and the sexual tension between them was off-the-charts HOT!  Although it was a little bit frustrating when Greta kept pushing him away even though it is crystal clear (to us anyway) that they have real feelings for each other, but at the same time the build up and anticipation was so worth it!  Although there are some elements of a love triangle, I don’t think it’s a fair one (he is up against Isaac after all) or something to worry about.

If you are looking for a book set in an exciting new world, with a strong and kick ass heroine, a sexy and sweet goblin, heart stopping action and awesome plot twists, then Greta and the Goblin King is exactly it!  I loved everything about this book!  The cover, the characters, the story!  I can’t wait to read more about Greta, Isaac and the world of Mylena.

PS: I LOVED the references to some of my favorite and creepiest fairytales!

5 out of 5 sparkly stars!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Greta and the Goblin King:
-“Maybe you’ve forgotten, but I don’t play nice with others.”
His arm tensed under her grip, and his gaze flickered to her mouth almost hesitantly, “On the contrary, I think the two of us would play very well together.”

-“You can put up walls, Greta, but sooner or later, I’ll break down every last one.  There won’t be any secret you can keep or any part of you I don’t know…”  He leaned forward, his voice lowering to a whisper “Intimately.”
Her knees shook at the thought.
Intimacy meant weakness.

-“As the king, I have every right to hold you until you give me what I want.  But I find I’m less interested in forcing you than I am in making you see that you can trust me.”

-“But why?  Why would you do something like that for me?” She drew in a sharp breath as his fingers caressed her cheek, his thumb grazing her bottom lip.  He leaned in and her heart pounded hard against the wall of her chest.
“Isn’t it obvious?”

-“I think showing off your sword might distract them from the fact that you have breast…at least for a little while.”
She choked, her mouth falling open in shock.  “Gee, thanks.  Do you think so?”
He grinned and waggled his eyebrows.  “It distracted me for, oh…at least a full minute.”

About the Author
Chloe Jacobs is a native of nowhere and everywhere, having jumped around to practically every Province of Canada before finally settling in Ontario where she has now been living for a respectable number of years. Her husband and son are the two best people in the entire world, but they also make her wish she'd at least gotten a female cat. No such luck. And although the day job keeps her busy, she carves out as much time as possible to write. Bringing new characters to life and finding out what makes them tick and how badly she can make them suffer is one of her greatest pleasures, almost better than chocolate and fuzzy pink bunny slippers.
