Review: Alice In Zombieland by Gena Showalter!

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles #1)
Release Date: 09/25/12
Hardcover/e-book
404 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

***ARC received by Harlequin Teen for review***

“My name is Alice Bell, and on the night of my sixteenth birthday I lost the mother I loved, the sister I adored and the father I never understood until it was too late. Until that heartbeat when my entire world collapsed and a new one took shape around me.

My father was right. Monsters walk among us."

I'm not a big fan of zombies, but after read reading and loving other Dearly, Departed and This Is Not a Test, I got bit by the zombie fever and I wanted another taste! Plus, with an awesome name and beautiful cover as this, how could I NOT want to read it? Although I have never seen Alice in Wonderland (I tried to once when I was little and it was just to weird for me), I love the characters (and the inspired fashion) of the story and knew that this one was a must-read for me. I expecting zombies in the story, but other than that, everything else about this book was unexpected and I loved it! No, this is not a retelling of Alice in Wonderland with zombies (although it has a couple of vague references) and anyone expecting it to be that will probably be disappointed. Maybe it was the fact that I have never seen the movie, but whatever it was, I absolutely loved this book!

Alice Bell is not your average teenager. Her father is convinced that there are monsters after him and his family. Monsters that only come out at night. As a result, he has lived his life in constant fear and paranoia of these monsters and deals with them the only ways he knows how. By self medicating himself with alcohol, not letting his family out at night (EVER!), and teaching Alice basic fight skills against these monsters. Because of this, Alice has never been able to do normal like go out at night with friends or even date. She doesn't even bother with any of that stuff because she doesn't want to deal with trying to explain her crazy dad to them. But on the day of her 16th birthday, she convinces (guilt trips) them into going to her little sister's dance recital. At night. Everything is going great when all of a sudden, her dad freaks out on the way home and causes them to have an accident. One minute, Alice's life is perfect. The next, she wakes up to find her family dead and discovers that she can now see the monsters that her father has always warned her about. The ones that killed her family.

After moving in with her grandparents (Who are adorable by the way! They try to learn slang to "connect" with her which results in some hilarious conversations).  Ali meets Kat who is one the awesomest best friends I have read about. Ali is attracted to Cole, who is basically the most dangerous guy in school and the perfect bad boy. You know, the kind that can be a jerk one minute but super sweet and sexy the next? And you don't know whether you want to punch him or kiss him, or maybe punch him AND kiss him? Basically, my dream book guy. Sigh...uh, where was I? Anyway, Alice is the perfect match for him because she isn't afraid to stand up to Cole and she isn't afraid of him and he can be more of himself around her  The relationship between Ali and Cole is my favorite kind. Although they are immediately attracted to each other, its not instalove. They have butt heads a lot and have some seriously hot chemistry between them but they take things slow. In fact, sometimes it was a little frustrating just how slow things were going, but I loved the pacing anyway.  I want more of Cole!

Now on to the zombies.  These are not your average zombies. Gena Showalter has blended them with another mythological aspect, one that I was worried wouldn't work at first but actually did. For me, this story had it all: strong female MC, hot and smexy jerkish guy, a great cast of supporting characters, humor, plot twists and ZOMBIES! Im already dying for book two and looking forward to more of Cole, Alice, Kat and the rest of the gang. Alice In Zombieland is not another book with just a pretty cover. But, it's better if you go into it with an open mind and don't expect it to be anything other than the great story it is.

4.5 out of 5 sparkly stars!

Some of my favorite non spoiler quotes from Alice In Zombieland:
-His sorta smile stretched wider. "Have you ever been in a fight?" With his free hand, he pinched a lock of my hair and rubbed the strands together. "Because you look something out of a fairytale."
"The wicked witch?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Please. The princess."

-Cole cupped my cheeks and brought my gaze back to his. "Why wouldn't I dance."
Uh, maybe because at first glance he looked like he ate puppies and kittens for lunch? As for what he enjoyed having for dinner-that couldn't be discussed in polite public.

-I almost felt sorry for the zombies. Almost. Id never been more determined in my life. They wouldn't stand a chance.

-"You're smart, pretty, and you aren't a douche purse."
If id had food in my mouth I would have spewed it. Douche purse? She must mean douche bag. But okay, I could roll. I was getting used to her filthy, funny mouth.

-He had me backed against the bedroom wall, his body supporting mine. My legs were wrapped around his waist. His hands were flattened beside my temples; mine were in his hair. He'd imprisoned me with his strength to kiss the breath right out of me.

Swoon Thursday (59): The Power of A Kiss

It's that time again! We created a HOT meme, and if you're new to the game, here's how to join in the fun:

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the adorable button above and share it on your blog. We want to know!

This week, our internal theme seems to be kisses that defy reason, that rule our thoughts, and that hold mad power over our character's senses. Those toe-curling, shiver-inducing smooches. Read on to see some of our favorite ones this week =D

RACHEL:   I'm a happy girl, because I finally got to read PUSHING THE LIMITS by Katie McGarry. Those who've read it know that this book is filled with yumminess, but this one definitely held some power:

Pure hunger darkened those chocolate-brown eyes. "Kiss me."Raw emotions and the need to hold him close overwhelmed me. Every part of me ached for him--my mind, my soul and my body. Without hesitation, I closed the gap between us and pressed my lips eagerly to his.

TARA: Swooning over Destiny's Fire by Trisha Wolfe:
“Dez,” Jace whispered, pulling me from my thoughts. I relaxed my lids, allowing my eyes to open. He stared at me, his blue eyes glowing fiercely. Then he brushed his lips lightly across mine. I froze. My heart stopped beating. He pressed his lips firmly, parting my lips, as he deepened the kiss.

KELLY: Swooning over Transcend by Christine Fonseca:

As her mouth met his, the sudden touch of her warm tongue against his was the end of all reason. Jason gripped her shoulders, released her beautiful lips, tasting the soft skin of her neck. A gasp escaped her mouth, and her breath felt like fire on his skin

TRISH: Swooning over DEFIANCE by C. J. Redwine:

His arms flex, pulling me against his chest, and his lips hover just above mine, our breath mingling in the dazzling morning air.
"I love you," he whispers, and then he kisses me again, his lips rough against mine, his breathing ragged as he devours my fear and makes me long to feel this way forever.

NEREYDA: Swooning over Alice In Zombieland by Gena Showalter:

He stared at me for a long while before finally meshing his lips against mine, his tongue sliding into my mouth.  The kiss was slow at first but soon sped into something wild.  Would it always be this way with us?  I wondered dazedly.
Somehow, my nervousness vanished and my hands ended up under his shirt, my nails embedded in his skin.  I couldn’t touch him enough.  Couldn’t get close enough.

SO NOW IT'S YOUR TURN! On your blog (and be sure to leave us a link), and/or on Twitter... SWOON us!

Spotlight: THE BLOOD KEEPER by Tessa Gratton

Random House Books
Hardcover, 432 pages
Published August 28th 2012

For Mab Prowd, the practice of blood magic is as natural as breathing. It's all she's ever known. Growing up on an isolated farm in Kansas with other practitioners may have kept her from making friends her own age, but it has also given her a sense of purpose—she's connected to the land and protective of the magic. And she is able to practice it proudly and happily out in the open with only the crows as her companions. Mab will do anything to keep the ancient practice alive and guard its secrets. But one morning while she is working out a particularly tricky spell she encounters Will, a local boy who is trying to exorcise some mundane personal demons. He experiences Mab's magic in a way his mind cannot comprehend and is all too happy to end their chance meeting. But secrets that were kept from Mab by the earlier generations of blood magicians have come home to roost. And she and Will are drawn back together, time again by this dangerous force looking to break free from the earth and reclaim its own dark power.

Wow! What else can I say about this book, but that Tessa Gratton has hit it out of the park again. First of all, let me just say how absolutely in love I am with this author's writing style. Her prose and descriptions are flawless, beautiful ,and at times, deliciously dark. I loved the first book in this companion series and if possible I loved The Blood Keeper even more. Unique characters and an eerie, intriguing plot that keeps you on your toes kept me up late and on the edge of my seat. This is one gothic romance that every paranormal romance fan should read. If you haven't checked out Tessa Gratton's books, you are missing out! Loved this one!

Spotlight: Defiance by C. J. Redwine

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city's brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father's apprentice, Logan--the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Yeah, so I’ve been dying to get my hands on this book since I saw that amazing cover. Tough, kick-ass girls are kind of my thing, and I think I screamed during the reveal for DEFIANCE. I was buried under edits when a package showed up on my doorstep. What could it be? I tore it open to find an even more gorgeous, shimmery cover of DEFIANCE. Screamed again. A big thank you to Balzer & Bray (Harper Collines) for sending a copy. It was exactly what I needed to get me through painful edits.

Normally, I’m not a big fan of dual POVs, because sometimes they only repeat something we’ve already read in a previous chapter, just from another character’s perspective. And, it can also be difficult to keep up with who is who while reading. But I commend Miss Redwine on a job well done. She pulled if off famously, and I loved being able to read Logan’s story, as well. Honesty, this was not a book just about the MC. Though Rachel is the main focus, as she’s battling this dark, oppressive world in search of her father, we learn so much about Logan, his struggles, and his story, too. Logan’s story is just as compelling and meaningful, and he has his own reasons besides Rachel to find her father. It came together to make a captivating plotline and fearless characters that I rooted for and wanted to see succeed.

It’s also difficult to balance the romance in an action-packed, fight-to-the-death type read, and I got many swoon-worthy moments that had my heart racing just as much as the fight scenes. An epic story that breaks down the barriers between dystopia and historical, DEFIANCE is an amazing read. I can’t wait for the second book!

***ARC received by Simon & Schuster for review***

I've seen this book around on Goodreads for a couple of months with like a million 5 star reviews. Those always make me nervous. After reading the summary I couldn't figure out what was so special about this book that everyone was going crazy over. I mean, the summary is pretty generic and not specific enough in my opinion. And another thing that had me worried: Slam poetry? Really? I'm not really the poetry type although I can appreciate it when it's very well written. I didn't even know what the heck Slam poetry was and I had to google it. When I found out what it was, it definitely intrigued me.  After reading yet another raving 5 star review, I decided to finally give it a try. Slammed starts out like a typical YA book...but that is where the similarities end.

Following the sudden death of her dad, Layken's mom decides to move her and her little brother from Texas to a small town in Michigan. Lake is still grieving and is hurt and angry about her dad's death and having to move. But when she sees her hot neighbor, Will, suddenly Michigan isn't looking so bad after all. After some serious flirting, Will takes Lake on a date to a nightclub where they perform Slam poetry. Through his performance, he is able to tell Lake his story. How his parents died when he was only 19 years old leaving him to take care of his younger brother. Lake falls for him hard and things are looking good between them, until something about Will's life comes up that is a big obstacle for their relationship. (Don't worry, they're not related or anything like that)  Now, all of a sudden, Will and Lake must go back to being just friends. Maybe this wouldn't be so hard if they weren't neighbors, or if their little brothers hadn't become best friends and spend almost all their time together, or if they didn't have such strong feelings for each other.  The more Will and Lake try to fight their feelings for each other, the further they are pulled apart. When things can't possibly get any worse, Lake suffers another huge blow that will forever change her life. How long can they fight their feelings before they are pulled too far apart?

I was NOT ready for what this story would do to me emotionally! I do not read on the weekends, hardly ever! But I decided to read a little bit of this around 1am and ended up finishing around 5:45am. This book absolutely sucked me in and it was literally impossible to NOT keep reading it. After all, who needs sleep anyway? This story has so many layers, not just the relationship between Lake and Will, but the relationship with Lake and her mom and little brother, Will and his little brother and Lake and her new friend Eddie (I freaking LOVED HER!). On top of that, we also had the slam poetry pieces that Will and several other people performed. Remember me saying I'm not a big fan of poetry? Well just scratch that out because I totally fell in love with Slam poetry! After I finished Slammed, I was an emotional wreck. My mind couldn't yet comprehend this beautiful yet heartbreaking work of art that I had just read. All I knew was that I needed more. More Lake and Will, more of their adorable little brothers, more of Eddie and definitely more slam poetry!  Luckily I had the sequel, Point of Retreat, just waiting to be read on my Kindle. I can't even talk about that book yet...

Forget about all the 5 star reviews you have read about Slammed and forget about this review. Go into it with a clear and open mind and it won't be long before you too will absolutely fall in love with this story too!  For me, Slammed was so much more than a story, it was a beautiful experience that I will never forget and will definitely read over and over again!  Emotional and riveting, heartbreaking but beautiful, Slammed has easily become one of my all time favorite reads!

5 out of 5 super sparkly stars!

Some of my favorite non-spoiler quotes from Slammed:
(There are so many but the rest are too spoilery)
-“And what’s a slam?” I ask.
“It’s poetry.” He smiles at me.  “It’s what I’m all about.”
Is he for real? A hot guy who makes me laugh and loves poetry? Someone pinch me.  Or not-I’d rather not wake up.

-But I can tell by watching you
That there’s no chance of pushing through
The odds are so against us
You know most young love, it ends like this.
The Avett Brothers-I Would Be Sad

-I listen and take in everything he says.  Really, though, all I hear is, “We can’t be together…blah blah blah…we can’t be together.”

-There’s a slight moment of hesitation in his eyes just before his lips close over mine.  In the past, his kisses have been very delicate and smooth.  There’s a different hunger behind him now.  He slides his hands under my shirt and grasps at my waist.  I return his kisses with the same feverish passion.  I run my hands through his hair and pull him to me as I lie back on the couch.

About the Author
Oh, man. Profiles suck! But,here we go. I'm addicted to and seriously floored by the talent of The Avett Brothers band, which is obvious in both of my books. They are 99% of my playlist. The other 1% being Eminem and Jason Mraz.
I love lindor truffles (the white ones with the chips inside) and have an unhealthy addiction to diet pepsi. A serious addiction.
I get stoked whenever I get a message from goodreads saying I have a new friend request...so request me, dangit!

Swoon Thursday (58)

It's that time again! We created a HOT meme, and if you're new to the game, here's how to join in the fun:

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the adorable button above and share it on your blog. We want to know!

And here are ours:

(No new swoons =( We're in the process of changing some things around and getting the new school season going. We'll be back next week with some brand new hotness!)

RACHEL:   Y'all, I'm so excited because I FINALLY got to read Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. I know, took me long enough, right? See my husband asked me to hold off for a couple months on the whole buying books thing because I have a slight--okay, large--obsession, and I totally made it through it thanks to the library, my collection of ARCs, and rereading old favorites. But dude, I requested Sweet Evil months ago...and as of last week, I still had six people in line before me. I couldn't take it any more. My impatience won out, my husband showed why he rocks so much, and I bought and inhaled this gem last weekend. And sigh... yeah, I love, love, loved it.

Here's one reason why...though if you haven't read it, it will make ZERO sense. But trust me, even with all the hot kisses--and this book has them--this is what I highlighted, bookmarked, and reread more than anything else *grin*

He picked up a green pear from his plate and bit into it, licking juice that dripped down his thumb. My cheeks warmed as I set down my glass.

And okay, just in case you are left scratching your head at that (he he), here's a kissy one:

We met halfway. His lips were as hot as his eyes, sending a shock wave through me. His tender mouth opened mine and I could sense the red of passion, like silk, circling us, pulling us closer. I was aware of a halfhearted battle within me, but I clambered nearer, pushing the notebook and papers to the floor.
His lips broke away from mine and moved greedily down my neck. A moan escaped me at the feel of his hot breath on my skin, and it was all the encouragement he needed.....

TARA:
Swooning over The Blood Keeper by: Tessa Gratton:

One of his hands lifted to my jaw, and his fingers caressed just under my ear. Neither of us moved otherwise for several shaking moments, until Will turned and kissed me. It was his lips on mine, unmoving, only resting together so that if we held still enough we'd melt into one.

NEREYDA: Swooning over Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover:

She wraps her legs tightly around my thighs, and we completely give in to our need for each other.  I grab the back of her head and press her mouth into mine even harder.  I can feel my pulse rushing through my entire body as we both begin to gasp for air between each kiss, as if we suddenly forgot how to breathe.  We're both desperate, doing our best to get past the moment when one of us usually calls retreat.  We pass that moment pretty quickly.

Swoons so good, they deserve a repeat.......

KELLY: Swooning over Minder by Kate Kaynak:

My breath quickened, and suddenly his lips were touching mine. My soul expanded with explosive intensity. My hands went around his neck, pulling him in. His arms tightened around me. My lips parted and his moved against them—tentatively, and then stronger.

TRISH: Swooning over This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers :

He draws me out until I'm in the same nice moment with him and we move to the cot and I want to tell him I've never done this before, that he has been my first everything so far, when his hand slips between my legs and touches me in a way I have never been touched by anyone else before.

SO NOW IT'S YOUR TURN! On your blog (and be sure to leave us a link), and/or on Twitter... SWOON us!

Defy the Stars
Release Date: 08/01/12
325 pages

Summary from Goodreads:

Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories.

Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.

Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.

Defy the Stars is written in an edgy free-verse style that will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder; however, the writing is accessible enough to speak to non-verse fans as well. The novel’s combination of steamy romance and raw emotion will appeal to fans of Gayle Forman, Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols, and Tammara Webber. With a story, language and form that both pay homage to and subvert Shakespeare’s play, Defy the Stars is much more than just another Romeo and Juliet story.

Check out my review below, the links, and the gorgeous trailer to tempt your book loving selves.

Paperback, 304 pages
Published September 11th 2012 by Entangled Publishing

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Review:
Rachel Harris is one of the most talented authors I’ve had the privilege of reading. A master of descriptive writing, Rachel paints rich, vibrant scenes and characters that jump off the page as she crafts a fresh, detailed world full of adventure and romance in her debut YA. Cat, girl, she knows how to get herself into some messes, but I love her reactions and logic as she navigates the world and time she finds herself in. There’re some truly hilarious scenes, scenes that made me melt, and others that broke my heart.

Lorenzo…with a swoon-worthy name like that, you know you better guard your heart, and Cat tries her damndest to do just that. But as this suave and sexy ladies’ man from the past works his way into her thoughts, she finds herself falling for him, and falling hard. I love Lor! He’s one of my top book boys, and I admit, I selfishly want him all for myself. With action, gypsy magic, amazing description of a world long past and heart-melting romance, My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is beautiful and enchanting, and a must read for lovers of Magical Realism.

Spotlight on The Shapeshifter's Secret by Heather Ostler

The Shapeshifter's Secret

ebook 328 pages

Cedar Fort
Find it on Amazon

Julia is finally discovering what–not who–she is.
Like any sixteen-year-old, Julia's used to dealing with problems. From her overprotective father to her absent mother to a teacher who definitely has it in for her. But everything changes when Julia's reactions become oddly vicious and angry---more animal than human.
I'm not big on werewolf books. But when I read the description for The Shapeshifter's Secret, it peeked my interest. And these are actually werecats, not werewolves, so that was a nice difference. But really this story is about so much more than shapeshifters. There's an entire story line about a girl named Julia who never knew her mother and has a really overprotective father. She's been living a secret all her life and has no idea.

So when Julia meets Caleb, a boy she has mixed emotions about, and he turns out to save her life, she's forced into a crash course in being a werecat. She also gets to find out more about her mother, who abandoned her and tried to steal Julia's father's royal title. None of this is what Julia bargained for, especially the part where she needs to leave her old life behind and travel by portal to another world where she's royalty.

Even though her safety is a constant issue and she has to pretty much stay under watch at all times, things aren't too bad. She does manage to have a secret boyfriend and snoop around the castle. But all this snooping is leading her closer to the danger that wants to use her for evil.

This is a quick read, and it's full of mystery as Julia pieces together who she really is.Download Kelly.png (1.8 KB)

1. What werecat would you want to shift into?

Though white tigers are beautiful, I would choose to shapeshift into a lion werecat. Lions are majestic, loyal, and will always be the king of the jungle.

2. Why werecats instead of werewolves?
I chose werecats for a couple of different reasons, one of them being that I absolutely love big cats. They’re fierce, aggressive, and dangerous, yet they also have this beautiful, playful, and gentle side to them. I think they’re more versatile than werewolves in that sense.

3. In the book, Julia has a secret boyfriend. Have you ever had a secret boyfriend?
I guess I did have a secret boyfriend in high school—he was tall, dark, and handsome. I must have really liked him, because we ended up getting married and are celebrating our three year wedding anniversary this June :-)
